My Bio
So...apparently I make bases now.

Requests:

Hey, you can always ask. I'll do it if it looks possible and interesting enough.

Commissions:

If you want to pay for my crap, you're nuts. Save your money and buy something that matters, maybe something from an actual artist.

Rules:

I don't have any, really. Change my bases in any way you please, upload the changes if you want, frankendoll (though it's polite to make sure the other base maker is okay with that, too), whatever. It's nice to link back to the base if you use or change it--mostly so that other people can find it--and I tend to favorite used bases, but even that is just a request/mild-to-moderate preference. I don't care enough to hunt anyone down or confront them if they don't want to link back.

I was smarter about this entire thing this time. First, I changed the way I weighted the values. Upon reflection, I was giving views far too much weight. This time I multiplied the favorites value by ten and downloads by five, and I think I STILL may be weighting views too heavily. Can't throw them out, though, because not everyone hits the download button--some will inevitably right click and save image as. (I feel sorry for those people when it comes to my bases--they tend to be very high resolution). Let's take a look at my list of submissions and the weights they ended up with (first column is number of days the submission has been up--o

Confession: I like data a lot (I also like Data a lot, as well as AI in general, but that's neither here nor there), so I really couldn't pass up the chance to take the statistics that DeviantArt provides and use them to look for trends in what makes some bases more popular than others. Now, one of the big confounding variables if I want to do this is time, because obviously the longer a piece has been around, the more people will have seen it. I wanted to think about variables other than time, though, like whether the base was of a couple or a single person, the resolution, and a couple of others that I'll go into in a few minutes. Thank you for the FAV ^^
Hawt bases! Pretty pics, neatly done and easy to use. :) I've just used one and planning to utilize even more~
Just curious, do you ask the original artists for permission, or are we all art pirates?
We're all pirates. Or, I don't know--it may fall under fair use since the original thing is being altered significantly and none of us (I hope) are actually trying to profit off of it. I'm not sure the legalities of bases have been tested in court, so I doubt there's a precedent.

If it makes you feel better, I've mostly moved away from using original fan art and toward screen caps/official art from anime and that sort of thing. I know some people think that's the same thing as using original art from a small-time artist, but I don't think it's any different from fan art and most larger intellectual property holders are pretty okay with that. It's the small-time artists who tend to get upset, and it's understandable--making bases from a screen cap of an anime isn't going to hurt sales in any conceivable way. Making a base from some struggling artist's original work might make it less interesting/unique (if the base or work based on the base becomes popular) and hurt them. I prefer not to hurt people, so...yeah, moving away from small-time artists, even when what they're drawing is fan art.
Thank you for the answer! Honestly I don't really mind this kind of piracy, I was just curious. :) It seems like a rightful argument. :D
